When I was growing up, my family would visit my grandparent's home in Maine. Their living room boasted a wall of bookshelves, and though an avid reader, my attention was drawn to the bottom shelf every visit. There, my grandmother had stuffed album upon album of photographs - each bursting with memories, ranging from their wedding after World War II, to albums dedicated to each one of the grandkids.

Fast forward to today, and my tome now sits on my own bookshelf amongst my own young family's memories - our wedding album, travel albums from Ireland and Nepal, yearbooks from our homeschool co-op. Now our four children sit with their favorite volumes, leafing through pages, hunting for themselves, for loved ones, or their friends. We show them our baby photos and they smile and confuse us for their sibling (our genes run strong here). Seeing themselves in those photos gives them a history - a place where they belong.
